Time and time again, our motivated clients come to therapy having tried the lot. Every self-help trick. The latest nervous system hacks. And yet, they can still find themselves overwhelmed, tapped out or disconnected from themselves and the world around them.
In an ever-overwhelming world - WAKE approaches individual therapy as a way to properly pause. Understand. Sit with and process and get back to basics - without the fuzz.
INDIVIDUAL THERAPY & COUNSELLING
At WAKE, we believe therapy offers the opportunity to make the unconscious, conscious. To explore the stories that have shaped your life, identity and experiences with the world around you.
Whether navigating trauma, grief, or shifts in gender and sexuality, dealing with the complexities of neurodiversity, family dynamics, or self-worth—every aspect of your story deserves to be heard and understood. We also work with clients exploring intimacy, sex, and the impact of life transitions, stress, and the challenges that come with them.
This is a space to make sense of our stories and experiences, hold and sit with emotions and create the foundation for the future you want. Based on your values.
And, at your pace.
When someone may seek individual therapeutic support
Life is ever-changing, with change being the only constant. This can make things tricky and challenging to navigate the complexities of emotions and experiences that come along for the ride. Individual therapy provides a space to reflect, heal, and move forward with greater clarity. You might seek support if you’re:
FEELING STUCK OR OVERWHELMED
Thoughts could feel tangled, emotions may feel heavy, and moving forward might seem unclear. Therapy can offer a space to process these thoughts and feelings.
NAVIGATING GRIEF OR LOSS
Grief isn’t just about losing a loved one—it can also stem from a loss of identity, a relationship, a possibility, a potential plan or direction or a phase of life.
SEEKING TO UNDERSTAND YOUR PATTERNS
Maybe familiar challenges keep surfacing—whether in relationships, work, or self-esteem. Therapy can help unpack these cycles and foster meaningful change.
PROCESSING LIFE TRANSITIONS
Major changes—moving cities, career shifts, entering adulthood, or redefining your identity—can bring with it a flurry of fear. Therapy can support finding steadiness in the flux.
EXPLORING PERSONAL IDENTITY
Questions around who you are, what you want, and where you belong can feel complex to answer. Therapy offers space for self-discovery without judgment.
REBUILDING AFTER CHALLENGES
Life throws curveballs (often) —whether from past experiences, relationships, or personal setbacks. Healing and rebuilding your sense of self can help create a path forward.
FAQs
-
Sessions cost $160 inc. GST.
-
Sessions typically run for 50 minutes. This gives us enough time to explore what’s on your mind while keeping the space focused.
If you feel like you need longer sessions or a different structure, we can discuss what works best for you. Therapy is about creating a rhythm that feels supportive and sustainable, for you.
-
Starting therapy is a brave and courageous first step. There’s no rush to reveal everything at once—our first session is simply about finding our rhythm. We’ll explore what’s bringing you here, what you hope to uncover, and what feels most important to you right now.
Therapy isn’t just about ‘fixing’. It’s about making sense of the stories we tell ourselves, noticing the patterns we repeat, and becoming more curious about the things we might not yet see.
There’s no set formula—we’ll work in a way that feels right for you while drawing on different therapeutic approaches when the time calls for it. The goal isn’t just insight but also holding and sitting with emotions to create meaningful shifts in our own perspectives beyond the therapy room.
-
Unfortunately, psychotherapy and counselling sessions are not currently eligible for Medicare rebates. This may change in the future, and you’ll be the first to know. However, the session cost is generally comparable to the out-of-pocket expense (gap fee) for a Medicare-funded psychology session.
-
Some private health funds offer rebates for counselling and psychotherapy, but it depends on your provider and your level of extras covered. It’s best to check directly with your insurer to see if sessions are covered under your plan.
If you need any details to submit a claim, I’m happy to provide the necessary receipts or information to assist with the process including provider numbers.
-
No referral is needed—you can book a session whenever you’re ready. Unlike some mental health services that require a doctor’s referral, counselling and psychotherapy are accessible without any GP paperwork. This means you have the freedom to reach out on your own terms, when the time feels right.
-
We ask for at least 48 business hours' notice for cancellations. As our offices are closed on weekends and public holidays, cancellations made outside this timeframe may incur the full session fee.
-
Booking an appointment is simple—you can organise a 15-minute free call so we can get to know each other. This can be booked on the Get in Touch page. If you’re unsure about getting started, feel free to reach out with any questions before committing to a session.
Once your appointment is confirmed, I’ll provide any details you might need, including location and a few confidentiality forms. Therapy should feel accessible and stress-free, so I aim to make the process as smooth as possible.
-
The short but honest answer to this one is that you won't straight away. The therapeutic relationship depends on many factors, such as our personalities, goals of therapy, and particular personal circumstances. That’s why I’ve created the intro 15-minute phone consultation to get to know one another and decide whether things feel right as a team.
-
Trust is at the heart of therapy, and confidentiality is a key part of that. What you share in our sessions stays between us, creating a space where you can speak freely without fear of judgment or outside influence.
That said, there are a few legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality. If there’s a risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else, or if there are legal obligations around child safety, I may be required to share information to ensure safety. If that ever becomes necessary, I will always aim to discuss it with you first.
Therapy is a place where your thoughts, fears, and emotions can be held with care. My role is to create a space where you feel safe to explore, process, and grow—knowing that what you say is respected and protected.

There’s no set number—it all depends on what brings you into the room and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. Some people come for just a few sessions to work through something immediate and specific, while others find ongoing therapy helpful for deeper exploration and long-term support.
We’ll check in on how therapy is feeling for you at the start of each session and whether it’s meeting your needs. The process is always collaborative—there’s no pressure to commit to a set timeframe, and you’re in control of how long you choose to continue.

The terms counsellor/psychotherapist describe professionals who provide talk therapy, supporting individuals, relationships, and groups through life’s challenges. While the distinction between the two is often blurred, both roles focus on fostering self-awareness, emotional growth, and meaningful change.
Counsellors and psychotherapists both work to explore thoughts, emotions, and relational patterns. While counselling is often more present-focused—helping clients navigate immediate concerns with practical tools—psychotherapy tends to delve deeper, uncovering unconscious patterns, past experiences, and emotional complexities that shape a person’s life. Many therapists integrate both approaches, tailoring their work to each client’s unique needs.
Psychologists, by contrast, are also very important and are trained in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions, often using structured interventions based on cognitive and behavioural models. Their work may involve psychological testing and formal treatment plans for disorders such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD.
The value of counselling and psychotherapy lies in their ability to offer deeply personal, relational, and holistic support. Instead of focusing solely on symptom reduction, these approaches invite curiosity, self-reflection, and lasting transformation—helping clients not just to cope, but to understand themselves on a deeper level.

Finding the right therapist is a deeply personal process, and it’s okay if it doesn’t feel like the right match. Therapy works best when you feel there is therapeutic alignment.
If you’re unsure, I encourage you to talk openly about what’s missing and whether adjustments and pivots can be made. But if you feel a different approach or therapist would better suit your needs, I fully endorse your choice—because what matters most is that you get the support that feels right for you. In this situation, I will endeavour to do my best to assist in referring you to other mental health professionals and specialists, so you have options.
-
There’s no right or wrong way to prepare—just come as you are. You don’t need to have everything figured out or know exactly what to say. Our first session is simply a chance to get to know each other and explore what’s bringing you here.
If it helps, you might take a moment beforehand to reflect on what feels most important right now — whether it’s a specific challenge, stuck feelings, or just a sense that something needs to shift. All in all, there’s no pressure. Therapy is a space to untangle things at your own pace with whatever you bring into the room.
-
Therapy is your space, and for most sessions, it’s best to attend alone for individual therapy or with your partner(s) if relationship therapy is the chosen approach. However, if having a support person with you for the first session would help ease any nerves, we can discuss whether that feels right for you and how to integrate them.
